Route No. 13 to the Achipsinsky Waterfalls
Route No. 13 “To the Achipsinskaya Waterfalls” 🏞️ — one of the most picturesque and popular hiking trails in the Caucasus Biosphere Reserve, running along the slopes of the majestic Achishkho massif. This classic eco-tourism route combines all the best that Krasnaya Polyana nature is famous for: relic beech forests, alpine meadows, mountain rivers, and a cascade of powerful waterfalls. The trail leads through the famous “Kupel” (Bath) recreation spot and Kruglaya (Round) Meadow to the crystal-clear Lake Zerkalnoye (Mirror Lake) and the waterfalls on the Achipsa River. It is an ideal choice for those who want to go on a real mountain hike, enjoy the silence of the reserve forest, and see some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Sochi area!
ℹ️ Features:
Nature and Landscape: a linear route approximately 8 km long, passing through broadleaf beech forests, subalpine shrublands, and high-altitude meadows, with significant elevation changes and several natural attractions along the way.
Interactivity: the opportunity to walk along a scenic trail past mountain streams, rest at the “Kupel” spot, see ancient dolmens, swim in a pristine mountain river, and take panoramic photos from observation decks.
✅ Who it is suitable for:
Active tourism and hiking enthusiasts — a demanding route with an ascent, allowing you to explore the diversity of high-altitude Caucasus nature in 1–3 days (depending on fitness level).
Families with teenagers and experienced hikers — the Route 13/1 variant “to the Kupel recreation spot” is suitable even for a one-day walk and is appropriate for families with school-age children.
Appreciators of silence and nature — there is a well-maintained recreation and overnight stay area near the lake, allowing you to enjoy solitude and true wild nature.
📝 Practical tips:
How to get there: the starting point of the route is located in the upper part of Krasnaya Polyana village, at the end of Zapovednaya Street (landmark — the water intake checkpoint). By public transport: take buses to the final stop “Krasnaya Polyana,” then walk 15–20 minutes to the beginning of the trail.
Safety: The trail is well-marked, but bring a navigator. After rain, there may be puddles and mud on the trails — comfortable trekking shoes with a grippy sole, trekking poles, a raincoat, and a water supply are essential. Bring a fleece jacket for the evening.
Ethics: the route runs through reserve territory; making fires, leaving the marked trail, picking plants, and leaving food scraps are prohibited, as they attract wild animals.
🗺️ Integration into the location: The route starts right from the edge of Krasnaya Polyana village and can be combined with a visit to the Khmelyovskie Lakes, the Achipsa Mountain Shelter, or an ascent to the peak of Mount Achishkho. It is convenient to start a multi-day hike deeper into the reserve from here or, conversely, to end an active day by descending to the village for dinner at one of the local cafes and a visit to the bathhouses.
Operating hours: seasonal, from June to October (the route is closed the rest of the year due to snow and avalanche danger).
Admission: paid. Submit an application on the reserve’s website.
