Akhtsu Gorge

Akhtsu Gorge 🏞️ — one of the deepest and most majestic natural wonders of the Caucasus, located in the middle course of the Mzymta River right on the road from Adler to Krasnaya Polyana. This impressive canyon, approximately 3 kilometers long, was carved by a mountain river through the limestone layers of an ancient sea, creating sheer cliffs up to 800 meters high. Here, the turquoise water of the river contrasts with the rugged stone walls, while the air is filled with freshness and silence, broken only by the sound of waterfalls. The road through the gorge was built between 1897 and 1899. Before that, the only way to get from Adler to Krasnaya Polyana was via mountain trails. One section of the road features the famous turn called "Lord, Have Mercy," named so due to the particular danger of this spot. The first road here was so narrow that drivers would make the sign of the cross as they passed through this section.

📝 Practical tips:

How to get there: Federal Highway A-148 (the road to Krasnaya Polyana), approximately at the 34th kilometer between the villages of Kepsha and Monastyr. By car: there are equipped parking bays and lots. By public transport: buses heading to Krasnaya Polyana (No. 105, 135, etc.) — you can ask the driver to stop at the turn to the gorge or get off at the "Kepsha" stop and walk for 5–10 minutes.

Safety measures: descending to the river requires navigating a steep trail, so comfortable footwear with a grippy, non-slip sole is necessary. In the summer season, the river water is very cold, and in the off-season and after rains, rockfalls are possible, so it is not recommended to go far under the sheer cliffs in bad weather.

Ethics: the area is a natural monument. It is strictly forbidden to leave trash, light fires outside designated areas, damage plants, or leave inscriptions on the ancient rocks.

🗺️ Integration into the location: The gorge is on the way to the main ski resorts of Krasnaya Polyana ("Rosa Khutor", "Gazprom", "Krasnaya Polyana"). Nearby are trout farms, Akhtyrskaya Cave, and the Psakh River Canyon. From here, it is convenient to continue the route into the mountains or, conversely, stop here on the way back to the sea to end the day on a picturesque note.
