Volkonskoye Gorge
Volkonskoye Gorge πΏ β a picturesque corner in Lazarevsky District of Sochi, where wild nature harmoniously intertwines with the mysteries of antiquity. This 1.5 km ecological trail runs along the bottom of the canyon, where the Godlik stream has been carving whimsical grottoes and niches into gray sandstone cliffs for millennia. The main gem of the route is a unique monolithic dolmen, the only one in the entire Western Caucasus carved entirely from a single rock. The "Two Brothers" rock β two huge sandstone boulders that broke off from the main massif β are positioned in such a way that a natural grotto has formed between them, through which the stream flows. This place, with its unique humid microclimate and healing springs, is ideal for those seeking not just a walk, but a touch of the secrets of ancient civilizations.
βΉοΈ Features:
Legend and history: The age of the dolmen is estimated at 4β5 thousand years, making it a contemporary of the Egyptian pyramids. Local legends claim that such monolithic structures were built by ancient giants or priests, and that the round portal-like opening served as a "door for the soul" of the deceased or a channel for ritual offerings.
Individual characteristics: The trail is approximately 1.5 km long. The main object is a monolithic dolmen carved from solid gray sandstone. From the outside, it resembles a giant stone "birdhouse" with a round depression on the flat roof, while inside it hides a horseshoe-shaped chamber with a spherical ceiling. Also, on the right slope, a natural hydrogen sulfide spring emerges, and its water flows into the stream via a stone channel.
Interactivity: You can peek inside the ancient burial chamber, wash your face with water from the hydrogen sulfide spring, take a dip in the cool pools of the Godlik stream, and take mystical photos against the backdrop of grottoes carved into the rock.
β Who it is suitable for:
Enthusiasts of calm ecotourism β a short and comfortable route without sharp changes in elevation.
Families with children β an exciting journey to the "Valley of Giants," where a child can see an ancient stone dwelling with their own eyes and listen to fascinating stories about the past.
Advocates of natural wellness β the opportunity to hold your hands or wash your face with water from the hydrogen sulfide spring, which is traditionally considered beneficial for the skin and joints.
