Svirskoye Gorge

Svirskoye Gorge 🌲 is a picturesque natural landmark on the northern edge of Lazarevskoye village, where the mountain river Svirka has carved a deep canyon into the rocks over thousands of years. This route is unique because it combines not only classic forest landscapes and waterfalls but also the ancient megalithic culture of the Caucasus: along the way, visitors encounter authentic dolmens, menhirs, and the mysterious “Moon Stone.” The route is relatively easy yet incredibly rich in impressions, making it an ideal choice for those who want to experience both wild nature and the mysteries of ancient civilizations in a single walk.

ℹ️ Features:

  • Nature and Landscape: Dense Colchic forest with relict beeches, mossy boulders, and giant ferns. The riverbed forms several picturesque canyons and natural basins with emerald-colored water.

  • Distinctive Characteristics: The most famous waterfall in the gorge is “Svirskoye,” standing about 7 meters high. A wooden bridge leads to it. At its base lies a small lake, approximately 2 meters deep, with cool water. There is also the cascading waterfall “Mother-in-Law’s Tears” and “Alam and Eve.” However, the true highlight of the route is the ancient megaliths: a trough-shaped dolmen and stone menhirs that are several millennia old.

  • Interactivity: The opportunity not only to swim in cool mountain pools but also to study ancient stone structures, touch history, and take atmospheric photos against the backdrop of moss-covered megaliths and falling water.

✅ Who it suits:

  • Lovers of history and esoterics — A rare chance to see authentic Caucasian dolmens and menhirs in their natural environment.

  • Families with school-age children — An engaging quest to find “ancient temples” and waterfalls, turning an ordinary walk into a real archaeological adventure.

  • Beginner hikers — Comfortable terrain with minimal elevation gain and a short distance (about 3–4 km) allows you to complete the route without special physical training.

📝 Practical tips:

How to get there: Lazarevskoye village; the starting point of the route is located near Svirska Street. Take bus No. 69 or 70 to the “Kafe Minutka” or “Svirska Street” stop, then walk about 10–15 minutes following signs to the checkpoint of the national park.

Comfort: The trail is rocky in places and can be slippery near the waterfalls, so comfortable closed-toe shoes with non-slip soles are essential. For swimming in the natural pools, bring a swimsuit and a towel, as well as a supply of drinking water.

Ethics: The area is under the strict protection of the Sochi National Park. It is strictly forbidden to make any inscriptions on the ancient dolmens and menhirs, move stones, litter, or leave the marked trail.

🗺️ Integration with the location: The route can be combined with a visit to “Berenyey’s Kingdom” or Mamedova Gorge, creating a full day of active ecotourism. After the walk, you can quickly return to the village center, the sea, and the beaches.

Opening hours: 24/7 (visits are recommended during daylight hours).

Entry: Paid. Buy a pass on the official website of the Sochi National Park.
